Electrodes for Tens UnitAre Electrodes for TENS Unit Safe? Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is the popularized name for electrical stimulation when Electrodes for TENS Unit are connected to a portable stimulator. These lightweight, portable machines are used to treat a variety of muscle pain. Studies have shown TENS machine treatments have been effective on pain due to nerve damage as well as labor pain. The unit is usually connected to the skin using two or more electrodes. A typical battery-operated unit is connected to the skin using two or four Electrodes for TENS Unit. This non-invasive nerve stimulation is intended to reduce both acute and chronic pain. Although controversy does exist as to the effectiveness, TENS is considered to be a safe way to treat pain. Safety: Electrodes for TENS Unit and the portable machines are used by chiropractors, massage therapists and athletic trainers to treat a variety of nerve and muscle pains. It is extremely important that the TENS unit be used under the supervision of one of these certified administrators. Once comfortable enough to begin using the TENS unit at home, following safety procedures is necessary to prevent long-term or even fatal damage. In order to prevent administering electrodes to improper places on the body, be sure to read the instructions and follow your doctor's directions carefully. Always clean the skin in the area where the Electrodes for TENS Unit will be placed, dry and use a thin coat of gel to protect the skin. Remove any jewelry, belts or other conductors of electricity that you may be wearing. Finally, place the pin conductors on the end of the electrode wires and use the control knob to find the correct setting. Talk to your physician about what setting is right for you. How it Works: Electrodes for TENS Unit pads are constructed to be self-adhering to the skin. They are thin, flexible and feature a low profile design, which allows for comfort while wearing. When attached to different areas of the body, Electrodes for TENS Unit send these frequencies into the muscles and ultimately the nervous system. Studies have shown that a high and low frequency of TENS produce their effects by activation of opioid receptors in the central nervous system. High frequency TENS activates delta-opioid receptors both in the spinal cord and supraspinally (located in the medulla). Lower frequency TENS activate mu-opioid receptors in both the spinal cord and the supraspinally. This release of receptors activates neurotransmitters and helps to produce analgesia, which is a chemical within the body that blocks the feeling of pain. The use of a TENS machine is considered safe but should be used with caution. Patients are advised to obtain a doctor's permission before use. Electrodes for TENS Unit should never be placed:
It is recommended that pregnant women and people with epilepsy seek the advice and supervision of a doctor before and during using a TENS machine. Electrodes for TENS Unit should not be placed on people with artificial cardiac pacemakers due to the risk of interference and failure of their implanted device. |
