How to Use TheraBands

TheraBand products, including the TheraBands, are the world's leading line of progressive elastic resistance exercise products for professional rehabilitation, athletic training and home fitness. The TheraBand brand name was first introduced by The Hygenic Corporation in 1978 and has gained an international reputation for quality and effectiveness among therapists, chiropractors and sports trainers.

TheraBands are a resistance based exercise system that is used for rehabilitating and restoring muscle and joint function. These bands are meant for improving conditioning, balance and strength building. Using these bands is useful for someone who is just beginning an exercise program, or who wants to add intensity to their workout without straining the muscles. The TheraBand system comes with latex bands available in eight color-coded levels of resistance. If you'd like, Latex-free Bands are also available in five separate color-coded levels of resistance.

Using Your Bands:

It's important that your TheraBands are sized appropriately for you so that you get the most out of your workout. Before you begin, hold your exercise band as if it were a jump rope so that the center is just barely brushing the floor. Step both feet into the loop while holding each end of the band in your hands. Wrap each band around your palm once or twice and pull up so that your hands are on your hips and then your waist. If this does not require stretching of the exercise band, you may want to cut a few inches off each end of the band until you have to pull the band tight to raise your hands to your waist.

Second, you need to size a band for your arms. Do this by putting the band across your back and holding one end in each hand. Extend your arms straight out in front of you and open them horizontally to the floor at a 180 degree angle. If this does not require effort, shorten the TheraBands.

Having your bands properly fitted to your height is very important to both the effectiveness of the exercise and your safety while using the bands. Once each band is properly cut to the desired length, you can use your bands for a number of exercises that will improve flexibility. As you advance through the color coded band system, you'll notice that the tension of the band is increased to promote further strength training.
